I have been slowly (this week) preparing things outside to plant some veggies. Looking for my soils and mixing up our mulch from last year. I gave away a bunch of planters last summer, but I'm sure we will have plenty for a good grow.DSC00597.jpg

.

Now i have no real yard and everything you see is growing in containers. Cheri calls it the "Parking lot paradise"

First I'm going to plant my Nasturtiums we got from our Aunt.

My yard is a mess from Winter. I keep every leaf for mulch and to help build the ground up (asphalt) with soils, (I think I have about 8 inches now after 14 years.  Isee some strawberries. :D

Ohh man, love the yard.  We have tons of apples farms here, so I doubt the cold could prevent fruiting. Same with grapes, we got lots of them too.   I dunno though man, I do know I really enjoy looking at your yard :D

I'll admit I have been putting off a bunch of yard work this year, and the place is a mess, next week I have a guy coming over to put a longer wheelchair ramp up. He is also tearing down my older front porch and building a new one. It is a bunch of work, he figure 4-5 days. He is also taking out our old Tub from the bathroom and putting in a new one. :) There going to haul an old wood pile i've been stacking on for 19 years and most if not all of it just burn crap.

Ive been planning this yard work and a wheelchair ramp now for about a year. Strider555 and Jeff built one that I'm keeping off the back porch, having a new ADA wheelchair ramp off the front door is going to be cool and so much easier for me to get out of the house with.

Okay I will update this as the work gets done, This weekend I need to save the thorn-less red raspberries they will need to cut down , off out not sure, hopefully I can save a few of them as they have been in my family for over 50 years. :D They are pretty die hard and are just putting off their Flora-canes, So I the system is putting off the right growth hormones right now.

(I'll run outside and grab a photo of them.) Now mind you it's dark out

a98b50bbf790f6d6d7046f4af23e3f67.png

Those when their filled in would cover that section which is right off the front door.

Let me grab a photo....

This is an over view from last year and shows all my vehicles and property lines. The top of the photo is North and the right is East  there is a red drawn line around the raspberries that I will need to move to another location.

Okay more updates soon. Thanks for popping in and seeing what were doing.

Peace

Hey guys. Im new to veggies. Last year I grew little tomatos and some basil. I built a bed outside that gets pretty good sun. I used the soil from my indoor plants that I had been feeding teas.

Like I said Im new to veggies. What can I grow? What is easiest? Im in N Cali, S Oregon right on the coast.

Do I need tomato cages for tomatos?

Should I build another bed in the shade also?

I saw you had brussel sprouts, I love them. Are they easy to grow?

Steelhead, with your locale you should be able to grow anything nearly!  Maters, peppers, taters, herbs, garlic, ect.   Peppers and tomatoes are close to out favorite plant in their needs. Anything large and fruiting generally needs a lot of light...Eggplant, artichoke, viney plants too like cucumbers, pumpkins, squash, ect all need a lotta light.  Lettuce, and most of your "greens" will require less light.

Tomato cages are a good idea otherwise they just sit on the ground and rot usually. :D

Some things like artichoke have more than one variety that will vary, as some things do not fruit the first year....asparagus is a good example of somethin that will take awhile to get a bountiful harvest from.

I no likey sprouts, so no idea :P

Ive got a giant artichoke plant going from the last people that lived here. Maybe I can get a photo.

I guess Ill grow tomatos, potatos, herbs, all kinds of peppers. Maybe cucumbers.

How do potatos work? Do I have to till before since they grow underground?

I am trying to grow them indoors in a trash can right now.  Potatoes are generally grown by taking a potato that started growin sprouts and sticking a piece of that tater, a few eyes worth in the ground.  Then as they grow you can hill up dirt onto the plant to increase production.  I bought True potato seeds (very rare, but cheap enough :D)  so they could breed sexually as most plants would.  Garlic is also like this but True garlic seed is nearly impossible to find.  Taters dont do well grown in the same spot, blight, disease, ect. year after year because they are basically cloned.  No gene pool.  So I like the idea of seeds.  I dont think tilling is ever necessary, but it can help.  As a kid we were dirt poor.  I remember picking carrots out of the ground that was so hard...lol...and they grew around rocks and looked quite poor.but we had carrots, and I never minded their pathetic appearance as a kid.  :D   If you want more info on TPS (true potato seed) check this out.  http://tatermaterseeds.com/shop/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=2&zenid=ed610378271aa4ed75df4b837a17030e
