Fungus gnats

Recommended Posts

I noticed a few gnats flying around when I was watering my flowering plants. Not many, maybe 3-4. This certainly doesn't mean there arnt more. I am growing organically and want to kill them the same way. Here is what I was thinking:

-fly traps

-increase air flow near soil

-put a layer of diatomacious earth on soil (how much?)

-hydrogen peroxide drench to kill larvae

-try not to over water

Any other tips? I don't want things to get out of control. So far the plants are showing no signs of stress. Thanks everyone!

I'd recommend rubbing the top layer of soil to crush anything you can't see crawling about a little before applying the DE. If you have worms they will eat the DE. I would apply a light layer, a dusting...

A glass/cup with a little red wine, or apple cider vinegar and a few drops of dish soap.....they will through themselves into that solution to die.

popping your head in the tent and telling them they'd better stop breeding because you don't want to be responsible for a genocide...

I've tried the small ball shaped fly traps, the sticks, and the paper...... I'd go with sticks or flypaper, because the traps with fluid in dry out and become useless really quickly because of the grow room conditions..

Spraying with a mild solution, with essential oils or just olive oil....and natural dish soap. 5ml of olive oil, a few drops of Apple cider vinegar and enough drops to emulsify the solution....this sticks their wings together and is super effective, I would spray in the top corners of the tent too, because at some stages they seem to prefer that space...

watering by hand....with a jug or something, so you can pour the water gently around the plants stem and reduce the overall surface dampness compared to the watering can....

I would recommend neem meal. Sprinkle a thin layer of finely powdered neem meal on top of the soil and after a few days they should no longer be a problem.  I don't have much time to explain further at the moment, but later I'll update with a more detailed reply.

I just picked up nearly a half-ton of the high-quality neem meal yesterday, and plan to distribute it through my new business, Pacific Crest Gardens LLC. I'll be posting more info later today in the member owned business section.  Let me know if you are interested in going the neem route, and I will take care of you CatManMoo.

Wonderful wh@ cooperation can achieve, eh?

:D

rosemary and lavender also deter thrips to some extent so clippings or essential oils of them might be of some use.

One suggestion for treatment of thrips, mites etc is take your essential oils or other treatment product, put it into a refillable spray can like this http://www.amazon.com/Reusable-Refillable-Multipurpose-Aerosol-Bottle/dp/B009IY6IHS and then place the spray can in an airwick freshmatic autosprayer device like this  http://www.airwick.com.au/products/freshmatic-automatic-sprays/

http://www.airwick.com.au/faqs/freshmatic-faqs/

1. WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THE AIR WICK FRESHMATIC STARTER KITS?

There are two starter kits available: the first includes the Air Wick Freshmatic device, an aerosol refill, and two AA batteries, together with instructions. The second includes an Air Wick Freshmatic device and two AA batteries only.

2. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE DECORATIVE AND WHITE GADGETS?

Both devices give the same fragrancing performance with Air Wick Freshmatic refills. The different decorative finishes offer a choice to allow you to select the right gadget to blend with the décor of your home

3. WHAT'S THE BENEFIT OF AIR WICK FRESHMATIC ULTRA AUTOMATIC SPRAY OVER OTHER AIR FRESHENERS?

Air Wick Freshmatic automatically delivers regular and consistent bursts of fragrance throughout the day, so you have the reassurance of your home always smelling great. Also, because each spray is a controlled dose, you get the same level of fragrancing from the beginning of the refill to the end..

4. THERE IS A RED ARM MECHANISM THAT IS PREVENTING ME FROM INSERTING MY FRAGRANCE REFILL. WHAT SHOULD I DO?

In order to reposition the red arm mechanism and insert your fragrance refill, TURN THE DEVICE OFF, then raise the red arm up to its fullest extent by rotating it clockwise. You can now insert your fragrance refill can and start the device.

5. WHAT IS THE PROPER WAY TO INSERT THE REFILL?

Keeping the unit directed away from your face at all times, switch the unit to "off" before attempting to insert the refill. To open the gadget, depress the button on the top and pull the front cover forward. Insert the refill can. The nozzle should be facing toward the front of the gadget. When the gadget is closed you should see the black nozzle orifice through the hole where the spray comes through the gadget. Close the unit, point away from your face and then select the desired level of fragrance. The 1st spray will come after a 15-second delay

6. CAN YOU ADJUST THE FRAGRANCE LEVEL?

Air Wick Freshmatic products have three time interval settings allowing you to have control over the fragrance level. By setting the device to the three flower settings, you can move from a subtle to increasingly intense fragrance experience.

7. WHAT DO THE FLOWERS ABOVE THE SWITCH MEAN?

The flowers mark the switch setting positions. The larger, and higher, the flower, the more intense the fragrance experience.

Large Flower: intense experience for maximum enjoyment.

Middle Flower: medium intensity.

Small Flower: Subtle experience for gentle fragrancing.

Dot : Off.

8. WHERE SHOULD YOU PUT THE DEVICE?

The Air Wick Freshmatic products can be hung on the wall. Alternatively, it can be simply placed on a shelf or cupboard. It should always be placed at a height of at least 2 meters above floor level. Read the instructions before use

9. HOW DO I SHUT IT OFF?

The left switch position is off. If the unit is not going to be in use for long periods of time we recommend that you remove the refill and/or batteries.

10. HOW DO YOU KNOW WHEN THE BATTERIES HAVE RUN OUT?THE DEVICE WILL STOP SPRAYING. THE BATTERIES WILL GENERALLY LAST THREE REFILLS. IF YOU SUSPECT THAT THE BATTERIES HAVE RUN OUT TURN THE DEVICE OFF THEN ON AGAIN. IF THE DEVICE DOES NOT SPRAY AFTER 15 SECONDS, REPLACE THE BATTERIES.

The device will stop spraying. The batteries will generally last three refills. If you suspect that the batteries have run out turn the device off then on again. If the device does not spray after 15 seconds, replace the batteries.

11. WHAT ARE THE BEST BATTERIES TO USE IN MY DEVICE?

When necessary replace the batteries with new, good quality, alkaline batteries. We do not recommend that you use zinc-carbon batteries or re-chargeable ones as these may not have enough power to operate your device for long periods.

12. APPROXIMATELY HOW LONG WILL THE AIR WICK FRESHMATIC AEROSOL CAN LAST?
  • Top setting (large flower): Up to 20 days
  • 2nd setting down (medium flower): Up to 50 days
  • 3rd setting down (small flower): Up to 60 days
  • Bottom setting is off.
13. HOW MANY BURSTS OF FRAGRANCE ARE THERE IN A REFILL?

There are more than 2,400 sprays of fragrance in a 174g refill.

14. MY DEVICE IS FLASHING A RED LIGHT. WHAT DO I DO?

If your device flashes a red light during use, please call Consumer Relations at 1800 022 046 and someone will assist you in troubleshooting the issue.

15. WHY IS MY FRESHMATIC NOT SPRAYING ANY FRAGRANCE?

Make sure the device has been turned off. First, check to be sure the nozzle is facing the correct direction. When the device is closed, you should see the black nozzle tip of the fragrance refill can through the opening in the front of the unit If you cannot see the black nozzle tip, you may have incorrectly placed the fragrance refill can into the device with the black nozzle facing backwards. Next, check to be sure that the red arm mechanism is in the raised position. If the red arm is not fully raised you may not be able to insert the refill fully or close the front cover of the device. The red arm is located in the opening where the nozzle of the can should rest. If the red arm is blocking the opening raise it up to its fullest extent by rotating the arm clockwise then push the refill back into the device as far as it will go. Then check if the refill can is empty by removing it from the device. With the nozzle directed away from your face press down on the square pad on top of the nozzle twice. If no spray is emitted replace the refill.

Re-insert the refill, close the front cover, and select the desired operating setting. The device should spray after 15 seconds. If the device does not spray after 15 seconds, replace the batteries.

If your device does not spray repeatedly with a full Air Wick® refill and fresh batteries please call the customer service helpline on 1800 022 046 for more information

16. THE LIGHTS ON MY NEW DEVICE ARE NOT FLASHING. IS THE DEVICE BROKEN?

No. You have the latest version of the device which does not have a flashing green light. This saves power making your batteries last longer.

17. HOW DO I USE FRESHMATIC?

DIRECTIONS: To replace empty can with this refill, first turn your AIRWICK®
FRESHMATIC® Ultra Unit to the OFF position. Discard the empty can and make sure that the red lever is pushed up. Insert this refill with the nozzle facing outward per the picture on the right. Set the device by setting the fragrance intensity control to the needs of your home: low, medium, high. The first spray will come after a 15 second delay. Keep unit directed away from your face at all times.

18. WHAT ARE THE SAFETY REQUIREMENTS?

Always read individual products pack safety direction.

Safety: KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN AND PETS. CAUTION: EYE IRRITANT. May be harmful if directly inhaled. May cause allergic reaction in some individuals. DO NOT spray towards face or body. DO NOT get in eyes. Avoid contact with skin. CONTAINER MAY EXPLODE IF HEATED. DO NOT puncture or incinerate container. DO NOT expose to heat or store at temperatures above 49º C. DO NOT position near heat or electrical sources. DO NOT spray into open flames. DO NOT spray directly onto surfaces. In case of contact with surfaces, wipe immediately with damp cloth. Use in well-ventilated rooms away from sleeping areas. For adult use only. Product is not a toy. Contains propellants, petroleum solvent and fragrance.

FIRST AID: If swallowed, DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING. IMMEDIATELY call a physician or Poison Control Center. If in eyes, IMMEDIATELY rinse eyes with water. Remove any contact lenses and continue rinsing eyes for at least 15 minutes. If irritation persists, get medical attention. If on skin, wash with soap and water. Discontinue use IMMEDIATELY and get medical attention if a reaction develops

This device is battery powered and has 3 timing settings, I think 15, 30 and 45 seconds.

I have some of these but have yet to get the refillable spray bottles, but I feel this will be a most useful tool when I do.

After neem meal top dress and increased air flow i did not see one gnat this morning when watering! Woohoo! Now I am just hoping the strong neem smell doesn't somehow leech into my buds but I have read that it shouldn't. Thanks a million guys!

It won't.  And the neem is also an excellent fertilizer.  I can't remember the NPK value, but it will enrich your soil and in turn nourish your plants.  Glad to hear that this has helped your gnat problem

My neem meal has an NPK of 6-1-2. Can I safely top dress my younger month old plants as well?
