Yesterday, it finally happened. My late dog used to do this to the new members of the flock, So I'm hoping this is a good sign.

The hens and chicks were in the med garden area in a corner, Copper came over and gave them a good sniff. He was smelling the Rhode Island red, the barred rock and the Welsummer. Copper lifted his leg,...Sweet and Sour left the immediate area running....the Barred rock and Welsummer backed off slightly...the Rhode Island red got closer looking up turning her head sideways....she seemed confused by this. Then Copper hosed her down in a long golden shower....the chick was shocked but couldn't move far since the other 2 were blocking her. My poor Rhode Island red had golden beads all over her from her head down....she was trying to shake it off. The Barred rock and Welsummer got a little on them, but it was from the splash back from the hosing down my Rhode Island red. Needless to say, we didn't carry them to the coop, we herded them. They have had a few days of practice. The Hens lead and we're in the rear. It gets easier each time.

This evening, I went to help my son feed the hens and chicks. ....found an egg laying on the ground without a shell. The pics below will show what I mean. The chick that laid it needs calcium...so some oyster shell was put out in their coop. in time the chicks will learn to lay in the nest boxes. I'm hoping she attempted to but the nest she wanted was in use. Hens get very fluffy and territorial when laying. They squawk and peak.  There was a very large egg in one of the nests....explains why I had a very cranky hen today

Here's what I mean by no shell just the membrane

I'm leaning towards the Golden sexlink mainly cause they can start laying 2 weeks earlier then my other brown egg layers. The other possibilities are the Rhode Island Red, the Barred Rock,or the Silver laced Wyandotte. I have seen the Golden sexlink and the Barred Rock in the nest, just no new egg under them. The Golden will  squawk more and bows vs the Barred rock. I have seen the Welsummer in the nest also, but she'll lay large chocolate with speckles eggs. She isn't expected to lay eggs til late June.

The name pecker had two chicks that could fit, but we decided on the Rhode Island red would get it.

methinks about 13-15 seconds is the longest recorded flight of a chook....they are more of a walking bird.

The chickens have been out in the yard since this morning. They were only locked up when it was Copper play time.

During the afternoon, the chicks found a spot to have a dust bath. Copper was out and off leash

Sweet and Sour are still unsure of Copper.
